Moody boy's bedroom, with graphic black and white bedding and deep blue walls

The Design Process

Where Wild Things Sleep

When our clients reached out to redesign their young son’s bedroom, the brief was clear: the room needed to grow up…eventually. For now, it had to balance rest, play, a love for animals, and have just enough storage to avoid stepping on a Lego barefoot at 6am.

Our task? To create a space that felt full of personality without screaming theme, with room to evolve as the little guy becomes a slightly bigger one. We know that kids’ rooms are among the hardest working in the house and that’s exactly how we approached this one.

Rather than opting for a heavily themed room that he might outgrow, we focused on creating mood and character through natural elements and carefully chosen details. We began by anchoring the room with deep navy walls and tempering the ceiling in a soft grey tone. Rich, calming, and sophisticated enough to earn a little “wow” from the adults in the room, too. To reflect this boy’s love of nature and animals, we incorporated subtle yet seriously gorgeous safari-inspired wallpaper panels as large scale wall art. Graphic black-and-white bedding added structure and energy, while a mix of soft textiles and cushions introduced comfort and depth. The design speaks to both the child and the parents…playful enough for a young boy, yet elevated and curated for a polished family home.

As any parent knows, toy storage isn’t optional—it’s a matter of survival! We designed the room to work hard behind the scenes…under-bed drawers tuck things out of sight, while a sleek ladder shelf keeps favourite books and builds on display without the visual chaos.

And because kids grow faster than furniture does, we made sure the layout could flex as his needs change. There’s space for a desk down the line or even a reading chair once he's old enough to enjoy a quiet afternoon. Hey, parents can dream too!

More than anything, this bedroom was designed to feel personal. It’s a space for imagination, independence, and a good night’s sleep. A space that reflects the world of a curious, energetic little boy—without locking him into any one version of himself.

That’s the sweet spot in children’s design: crafting a room they love now, with enough foresight to grow with them later.
